How Soon Can I Exercise after Bariatric Surgery?
How Soon Can I Exercise after Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery can be life-changing for individuals who have struggled with losing weight their whole lives. However, it is only the first step towards a healthier life. Following bariatric surgery, it is important to maintain a balanced diet and a regular exercise schedule to ensure the best results following surgery!

While exercise is extremely important following any weight loss surgery, it is necessary to know when it is safe to engage in physical activity. Here is an approximate exercise timeline to reference following bariatric surgery:

  • Right after surgery
Take it slow! You are still recovering from your surgery and you don’t want to cause any complications due to overactivity. However, walking for about 15-20 minutes a day can help you on your road to recovery. Avoid longer or more strenuous physical activity during this time.
  • 2-4 weeks after surgery
You’re body is still healing but you can now safely engage in more physical activity. This includes longer or faster walks, stretches, and any other light exercise advised by your physician. Heavy lifting of over 10-15 pounds is to be avoided during this time.
  • 5-6 weeks after surgery
At this point your body is healing and strengthening, meaning that you are able to engage in moderate exercise. Cardio workouts such as cycling, swimming, and water aerobics are recommended due to decreased stress on your muscles and joints. While this level of activity is possible for most, it is important to listen to your body and stop any exercise that causes discomfort or pain.
  • 6+ weeks after surgery
Once you pass the 6 week mark, strength training is recommended in addition to your cardio workouts. You should try to push yourself while still avoiding going past your pain threshold throughout your workout.

Exercise after surgery can be a tricky thing to plan for, but listening to your physician and your body is vital to ensure a safe and healthy recovery. If you have any questions about returning to physical activity following bariatric surgery, contact Dr. Ahmad and his team today!
