A Helpful Guide to Managing Acid Reflux While on Vacation or Eating Out
A Helpful Guide to Managing Acid Reflux While on Vacation or Eating Out

Vacations and dining out are meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, but for those dealing with acid reflux, they can also be a source of discomfort. Rich foods, irregular meal times, and unfamiliar menus can all trigger symptoms. Fortunately, with a little planning and awareness, you can keep reflux in check and still enjoy yourself. Here’s how.

Choose Reflux-Friendly Foods When Dining Out

When eating out, try to stick with foods that are less likely to trigger reflux. Avoid spicy, fried, and fatty dishes, as well as citrus-based sauces and tomato-heavy meals. Opt instead for grilled or baked lean proteins, steamed vegetables, and whole grains. Don’t be afraid to ask for modifications - most restaurants are happy to accommodate dietary needs.

Watch Your Portions and Meal Timing

Overeating is a common trigger for acid reflux. Consider ordering smaller portions, sharing a dish, or taking leftovers to go. Also, try not to eat too close to bedtime. Give your body at least two to three hours to digest before lying down, especially after a big dinner on vacation.

Stay Active and Upright After Meals

It might be tempting to hit the lounge chair right after a meal, but staying upright and lightly active can help keep reflux symptoms at bay. A short walk along the beach or around town can aid digestion and reduce the chance of acid backing up into the esophagus.

Limit Triggering Beverages

Alcohol, carbonated drinks, coffee, and citrus juices are known reflux triggers for many people. Stick to water or non-acidic herbal teas when possible. If you do want to enjoy a drink on vacation, try to do so in moderation and alongside food.

Pack Reflux Medications and Consult Your Specialist

Don’t forget to bring any prescribed or over-the-counter medications you use to manage reflux. Antacids, H2 blockers, or proton pump inhibitors can be helpful to have on hand. If you experience persistent or worsening symptoms, it may be time to consult a specialist.

If you’re struggling with frequent acid reflux, even outside of vacations or meals out, it could be a sign of an underlying issue. Book a consultation with Dr. Ahmad to explore minimally invasive, long-term solutions such as robotic laparoscopic surgery for acid reflux and enjoy life without discomfort.
