Robotic Assisted Gastric Bypass

ahmad-robot-image

Dr. Ahmad routinely utilizes the da Vinci Surgical System, the most advanced surgical platform in the world, to perform minimally invasive gastric bypass surgery.

Dr. Ahmad, a pioneer in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, is the first bariatric surgeon in Suffolk County to use the advanced da Vinci robotic system to perform the bariatric procedure. He has completed training as a Console Surgeon using the da Vinci Surgical System and EndoWrist Instruments, as well as a da Vinci Single-Site Training program. With gastric bypass surgery, a surgeon creates a small pouch in the top of the stomach that restricts the amount of food that can be digested at any time. The body’s ability to absorb fat from food is also substantially reduced through bypassing the duodenum, a part of the small intestine. Dr. Ahmad has performed over 290 robotic gastric bypasses and is looking to expand his use of this advanced technology to treat hiatal hernias and perform single incision laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

davnci-imageThe da Vinci Surgical System is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand a surgeon’s capabilities. Surgeons using da Vinci make small incisions to introduce miniaturized wristed instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. The surgeon is seated at a console and views a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the surgical site. At the same time, the surgeon’s hand movements are translated by state-of-the-art robotic and computer technologies into precise micro-movements of the da Vinci instruments.

  • Enhanced visualization
  • Enhanced visualization
  • Improved dexterity, accuracy ® control
  • Precise suturing which offers an alternative to stapling for optimal anastomosis
  • Detailed dissection and suturing for intricate revisions
  • Increased surgeon ergonomics to minimize fatigue

Similar to conventional laparoscopy, da Vinci Gastric Bypass may also offer numerous potential benefits when compared with traditional open surgery, including:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • And a faster return to normal daily activities
