Lap-Band® is an adjustable gastric banding system used to facilitate gradual weight loss in morbidly obese patients. This procedure involves the placement of a hollow doughnut-shaped tube around the upper part of the stomach, which is then filled with saline (salt water) to restrict the amount of food the stomach can hold. The name of the procedure signifies the laparoscopic techniques and gastric band used in this minimally invasive surgery.
Gastric bypass surgery is performed to help morbidly obese patients lose significant amounts of weight—without gaining it back. It is considered the "golden standard" for obesity surgery, with a success rate of over 80%. Most patients lose at least half of their excess weight and keep it off for more than five years.
Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss procedure in which a large part of the stomach known as the greater curve is surgically removed to restrict food intake. The new stomach is created through a surgical stapling technique and is the approximate size and shape of a banana. This procedure is simpler than most other bariatric surgeries but provides comparable results.
For those patients who have struggled to lose weight and/or have regained weight following Gastric Bypass Surgery, hope is not lost. You may be a candidate for Revisional Bariatric Surgery to regain control of your hunger, your appetite, and successfully achieve the weight loss you desire.
By placing an Adjustable Gastric Band (Lap-Band® or Realize Band) around the upper portion of the gastric pouch we can help you regain a level of restriction and early satiety which will aid you in your journey towards lifestyle modification and successful and sustainable weight loss.
